Yesterday I took part in a protest outside BP's oi $Yesterday I took part in a protest outside BP's oil terminal near Southampton. I was one of 4 activists who locked ourselves to oil drums for 6 hours to highlight BP's greenwashing words in the face of their actions. Below is my statement explaining why I took such drastic action. BP have known for 40 years that the extraction and burning of fossil fuels was and is heating the planet, disrupting the weather systems and endangering the stability of the environment and life on Earth. We already have more fossil fuels than we can safely afford to burn. And yet BP are still drilling in the Arctic, developing a mega project in Australia and fracking in Patagonia. They refused to set targets in line with the Paris Agreement and urged their shareholders to vote against the Paris Agreement Climate Resolution. They are one of the most environmentally damaging companies in the world and yet they recently had the audacity to run a campaign asking us the individuals what we are doing to reduce our carbon footprint. The hypocrisy is staggering. No amount of recycling, walking to work, meat free Mondays are going to have the impact required. For the scale of change needed, companies like BP must stop greenwashing and start acting like there is a Climate Emergency. It was an incredibly successful action. It was sympathetically covered nationally and internationally in the media. I was interviewed by the BBC and ITV (nerve wracking😳) And we weren't arrested! I think that was because the courts are becoming more and more sympathetic with concerned citizens and a charge is less likely to stick.
